St. Louis, MO March 8th – The St. Louis Rambler Rugby Club today announces the beginning of its seventy-fifth season. The 2008 season marks the next chapter in the proud history of the nation’s second oldest active rugby club. Founded in 1933 by Harry Langenberg, the Ramblers have been the mainstay of rugby in St. Louis. Throughout the years players and members have come and gone, but the club has stayed constant. The game of rugby has taken the club and its members across the country and abroad enjoying success on the field and spreading camaraderie off the field.
“The Ramblers have been a part of my sporting life for over fourteen years,” says Dale Peluso, current club President. “The club provided me a place to continue playing rugby after college, and I’ve built strong friendships that will last even longer. It’s a privilege to be part of such an historic club, and I look forward to the next era of the Ramblers.”
The Spring portion of the 2008 season begins with the first match against the St. Louis Royals followed by a visit from the Louisville Rugby Football Club the following weekend. Matches throughout the Spring will take the Ramblers to Tennessee, Iowa and from one end of the state to the other with the goal being to introduce new players to the game and help veteran players refine their skills prior to the Missouri Rugby Football Union Cup Matches in the Fall. The goal of the Fall season is to win the MRFU Division II Championship, and compete in the Western Rugby Union playoffs.
The club isn’t just about playing rugby. The year will be filled with events to commemorate reaching seventy-five years of existence. In February the club hosted its annual trivia night with great success. This summer the club will host its 6th annual golf tournament and 4th annual summer 7’s rugby tournament. There will also be a club dinner to celebrate the season. The celebrations will come to a close in November when the club will travel to Las Vegas to meet with former teammates and play the Blackjacks as well as a table game or two.
About the St. Louis Ramblers: The St. Louis Ramblers play in the USA Rugby Division II. Members of the club come from all walks of life. The club is always interested in spreading the game, and welcome anyone interested in learning how to play or to just learn enough to enjoy watching on a Saturday afternoon.
